What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a simple and effective way of helping someone achieve their goals. Hypnotherapy does this by altering a person's negative beliefs and habits.

Gentle relaxation techniques are used to allow the brain to enter a relaxed, focused state. In this state the conscious mind becomes less active, allowing the unconscious to be accessed far more easily. Carefully chosen, positive suggestions can then be directed at the unconscious mind. Because these suggestions are received directly by the unconscious they have a positive effect on subconscious habits and beliefs. 

The changes that have been made one the unconscious level will in turn alter the conscious behaviours, feelings and thoughts, bringing about the desired change. 

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Current literature suggests around 80 - 90 per cent of people can be hypnotised. However I am of the belief that it is largely down to the individual whether or not they believe they can be hypnotised. If you go to a hypnotherapist in order to prove to yourself that you cannot be hynotised then you won't be! You don't have to be certain about the process but as long as you are open to the possibilities then hypnotherapy can help. 

Will I be in control?

Yes! it is not possible to make someone do something they don't want to whilst under hypnosis. You will always be in complete control, so for example if an emergency situation such as a fire alarm going off arose you would immediately open your eyes feeling alert, refreshed and ready to deal with the problem.

Is everything I tell you confidential?

Yes. All therapists abide by the same code of confidentiality as a doctor. This means that everything you tell me is kept in the strictest confidence. There are however a few exceptions to this rule. If you disclose to me any illegal activity, or if I believe you are in danger of harming yourself or someone else, then it is my professional duty to report this to the relevant organisations.

Do I need to be referred by a GP?

No, although GPs do refer people to hypnotherapy it isn't a requirement. However, if you have certain medical conditions I may ask you to visit your doctor before we commence treatment.

Are any drugs used? 

No, none at all.

How long is a hypnotherapy session?

Sessions last 50 minutes. The first session includes the initial consultation so this might vary slightly.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no way to know exactly how many sessions will be needed as everyone responds to hypnotherapy differently. Some people find they feel the effects almost immediately while others need a few more sessions before they notice any change. Very roughly, it takes around four to five sessions. 

How far apart should appointments be?

Ideally sessions should be weekly of fortnightly but this can be varied if necessary.

How will I feel after a hypnotherapy session?

Many people feel refreshed, invigorated and more confident after their hypnotherapy session. It's also very common to feel a sense of relief in starting to tackle the issue that has been affecting their life.
